ARP XP - Closer (IMLTDCD02)

ARP XP steps up to the plate for Parisien label IM:Ltd’s first solo artist album, entitled Closer. Featuring a solid collection of deep techy drum and bass, a touch of autonomic, and a number of 140 bass pieces, ARP XP manages to push the boundaries of what is usually heard from this forward-thinking label.

With the title track (Closer) being an atmospherical, dark and encompassing arrangement, the scene is quickly set for the 12 track LP. Solid, heavy-weighted basses, astral vocals and a travel across the 140-170 BPM spectrum. Whilst providing a perfectly suited track for the current tech scene with Keep Your Heads High, ARP XP easily switches to 2-step D&B pieces before hitting the 140 BPM camp with Maybe Tomorrow and Curiouser.

What can be seen with this LP is a culmination  of sounds from some of the leading tech producers and labels at the minute. It can be said that ARP XP takes influence from some of the freshest producers on the scene and this helps to create an album that not only covers the majority of the bass music spectrum but is also brilliant to listen to.

Command Strange - Soulmate

Command Strange pulls a slightly different sound out the bag, with this minimal atmospheric 140 track entitled Soulmate. With soft, gliding pads and a deep rumbling bass line alongside, this piece switches style repeatedly whilst at the same time keeping Command Strange’s sound consistent throughout.

Slow amen breaks, and a garage influenced four to the floor section drop highlights CS’s ability to cross over styles not only from one track to the next but within individual productions as well.

One tune that’s been given a lot of attention up here in Manchester and around the country at the beginning of this week was Chimpo’s Blowfish. Industrial drumlines and dark wavey basslines has mad this track something dirty, and Chimpo without a shaddow of a doubt steps up to the mark with this one. Crossing the lines between dubstep and autonomic, this track has defied genres to become another sought after piece after the likes of Dub Phizix dropping at the end of last year.

Family Tree Records 001

Family Tree Records, is a forthcoming label stemming from the heart of London. Focussing primarily on dubstep, 140 bpm rollers and experimental, this new label is set to make movements on the bass music scene after it’s debut single.

With the first release about to drop for the new label, it should only be fitting that they release the sounds of an up-and-coming artitst, and this is found in that of Leeds based Producer/DJ Side-Projekt.

Side-Projekt starts of his debut Lift Dub with carnival reminiscent organ stabs and a tight, skipping drum beat. Worthy of being incorporated into any big DJs mixes, this tune is surely set to get Side-Projekt noticed on the Dubstep scene.

Track two is a remix of A-side by none other than dubstep duo Fused Forces. Keeping the tunes essence at heart, Fused Forces give Lift Dub an even more dub-up feel. Extra sub, and swinging tamborines ensures this tune gets a nice re-work for it’s release.

Lift Dub is out in just over a week on Family Tree Records.
